Second Round Woodworking started with my love of bourbon and the building of a bourbon flight board to enhance the bourbon experience. When I am working in the shop, I get a feeling of joy, where all the pressure of the world outside melt away, when the only thing that matters is the accurate cut of a piece of walnut, the smooth sanding of the board, the buffing of the tung oil into the finished product. It is a feeling similar to the vibe we get when we are going to the bar for that second round. We are settled in with friends, we are one drink into a great conversation and we are excited to keep that good vibe going.

 

The second reason is that this is my second round in what has been life filled with joy and satisfaction. After 30 years in public education, I am taking my longtime mental escape, woodworking, and putting it front and center, sharing it with others with the same joy and engagement that I did with students during round one. While the outcomes of my work in the second round will be very different from the first, I hope they contribute to the increased well being and happiness of the people for whom they serve.
